Back in 2006, guitarist Phil Keaggy played with me at my CD release party for The Sweet Soul Light in Austin, TX. Phil produced that album with me … but our story goes back even further than this. Phil was one of my first real friends when I moved to Nashville long ago. We bonded immediately as he would come into the bread bakery where I worked, which was right next door to the pipe tobacco shop he frequented. Phil played on the recordings I made in Nashville (both of which are on my first album, Angels Running After), and I sang on some of his. He would bring me early roughs and outtakes of records he was making. And later—later we had another connection—Daniel Lanois. But we’ll talk about that tomorrow …
